Australia – China: Initial situation
Neither Australia nor China have a decent start to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Australia was stunned in their first game at home and now has no room for another mistake as the competition progresses. China made their debut at the 2002 FIFA World Cup and that has been their only appearance to this day. The most populated nation in the world is still searching for the recipe that will bring them into the company of the best teams in the world, but it seems that, again, that will stay only a dream. China is at the rock bottom of the standings without any point. In the third round of the qualifiers, they lost both games. First, they lost 7-0 on the road in Japan and then failed 1-2 at home to Saudi Arabia. Now China has lost the last three games and has only one win in the last ten contests – 4-1 at home against Singapore. Six of their last ten games have ended under 2.5 goals and they failed to score in five of those ten.
