Tanks are one of the core classes of champions in League of Legends. They are distinguished by massive amounts of HP, armor, and magic resist. Tanks are great for engaging fights, and playing the front-line role for their ally team.

Here are the best League of Legends tanks you can explore!

Best League of Legends Tanks

Malphite

Malphite-Wallpaper title

Malphite is the absolute cornerstone of top lane tanks. He has incredible HP and resist ratios, as well as a versatile kit that makes him indomitable. This champion is incredibly easy to pick up and play. His loadout consists of abilities that can be used for many scenarios.

His Q grants him movement speed which is great for catching enemies or escaping. His W grants him AOE damage that can be used to clear the waves. His E significantly reduces the enemy’s attack speed, making auto-attacking champions nearly useless. Finally, his ultimate is a great, damage heavy AOE knock up that can be used to engage fights and disrupt enemies.

Overall, Malphite is one of the most solid and universal picks. He is great at laning, great at skirmishing, and he becomes most powerful in the late game. Despite being one of the heaviest tanks, he still has enough damage to significantly hurt opposing carries.

Shen

Although quite a niche pick requiring a special skill-set, Shen still ranks very high amongst the best League of Legends tanks. This pick is most distinguished by his ultimate which can be used to teleport to any ally on the map. The ultimate is an incredible resource that shields the designated ally and which can easily turn the outcome of any fight.

Shen is also quite strong in the laning phase. He is not exactly the champion that will solo kill everyone, but he can still make some pretty great plays. Shen is strongest when played against auto-attacking champions, as he has the ability can deflect incoming auto-attacks.

Sion

sion-splash-scaled title

Sion is another unique champion with a highly interesting kit. This tank’s gameplay revolves mainly around split-pushing. However, Sion can also be played as a top lane support. He can roam to the ally lanes a couple of times in the game, which is enough to create some pretty sweet leads. Regardless of playstyle however, it’s always best to use a teleport when playing this champ. This spell enables us to join important fights, and it can also be used to return to lane or as a split-pushing tool.

Cho’Gath

ChoGath title

Cho’Gath is one of my personal AP tank favorites. He is mostly known by his ultimate which can consume enemies, minions, and neutral objectives. This ult makes him grow in size each time he consumes an enemy. Additionally, the ult will also make Cho’Gath get additional HP, and the ult will deal more damage the more HP Cho’Gath has. The ultimate is incredibly powerful for chopping away carries, or securing objectives.

Final Thoughts

League of Legends tanks are the old-school type of champions. The greatest overall tank pick in the current times is Malphite. He is incredibly easy to play and has unparalleled strength. Shen, Sion, and Cho’Gath are also nice champions to explore. They have plenty of damage and can successfully front-line for any type of team composition.

Aside from these picks, you can also check out Maokai, Mundo, Leona, and Alistar. These are also incredibly strong in their respective lanes.
