Understanding Diving Basics

Diving involves attacking enemies under a tower. Since towers deal massive damage in the early game, diving requires quite precise planning and execution. Our goal with diving should be to secure a kill with the least amount of casualties on allied teams.

Factors to Consider Before Committing to a Dive

The first things we need to check before diving are HP and mana. If any of our allies are low on this resource, executing a proper dive can be extremely challenging. Additionally, it’s important to check the enemy resources, as we can rarely dive a champion that is full of HP.

Wave Management

Wave management is a crucial component of diving. Each time we dive, we will want as big as possible a wave of allied minions stacked under the tower. This will enable us to get closer to the tower, and proceed with our dive.

Assess the Cooldowns

Assessing our ally and enemy cooldowns is another essential thing to do. We will never want to rarely want to dive a Tryndamere just to find out he has an ultimate ready to extend his life for 4 seconds. Miscalculations like this can be catastrophic.

Vision of Other Enemies

When diving, we will also want to have the vision or at least the approximate location of our enemies. This will prevent situations where we commit to a dive, just to find out that the enemy has backup 2 seconds away. The backup will, in most cases, cost us our lives, and might very well cost us the entire game.

Team Composition

Another thing we should focus on is our team composition. The first person who should dive is usually the one that has the most CC, HP, or both (ex. Nautilus, Braum, Malphite), however, sometimes we can start dives with champions like Master Yi.

Master Yi is great for diving as he can reassign the damage in synergy with an ally. Here is what it would look like. Yi starts attacking the enemy (tower focuses Yi), Yi gets poked down by the tower and uses Q to dodge one hit. While Yi is still in Q animation, an ally can hit the enemy to refocus the tower towards themselves.

The Yi situation is the perfect example of splitting the damage. By splitting the damage, we use the pools of HP of two champions, and we can manage to survive dives we otherwise would not.

Final Thoughts

Diving is one of the most essential League of Legends skills which can be used to converge great leads. It’s somewhat hard to do if you are a beginner at it, however, it’s a skill that’s somewhat easy to build. To make a successful dive, we need to make a proper calculation of whether it will be successful or not, and this comes through experience only.
