What Are The Best Cars In Rocket League?

If you’ve just started playing Rocket League, you’ve noticed there are different types of cars in your garage to choose from for your game. I have tested most of them and found that they were similar in almost all aspects, except that some didn’t suit my gameplay at all.

Here’s the bottom line: the strength or speed of all the cars is the same. The only difference is the hitbox each car uses.

What’s a hitbox? In simplest terms, a hitbox is a certain body type, a kind of invisible field, an outline around your car that determines its center of gravity. Rocket League says that there are six body types in total by default and every car ever added in the game adopts one of them.

  • Merc (tallest hitbox height)
  • Octane
  • Hybrid
  • Dominus
  • Breakout
  • Plank (shortest hitbox height)

All hitboxes are slightly different in length, width and height. All cars with the same hitbox preset will follow the same exact physics without any handling differences – be it in the air and or the ground.

Preset Length (uu) Width (uu) Height (uu) Angle (degree)
Octane 118.01 84.20 36.16 -0.55
Dominus 127.93 83.28 31.30 -0.96
Plank 128.82 84.67 29.39 -0.34
Breakout 131.49 80.52 30.30 -0.98
Hybrid 127.02 82.19 34.16 -0.55
Merc 120.72 76.71 41.66 0.28

If you want to choose solely on the basis of speed, choose whichever you like without any impact on your gameplay – there’s no difference. The best cars are only the ones that suit your in-game preferences, that’s all.

However, in general, the cars we’ve seen being most commonly used are Octane and Fennec because they are easier to get comfortable with. (And the fun fact is: both of them have the same hitbox preset.)

How To Select the Best Car In Rocket League?

The best car in Rocket League is the one that helps you feel comfortable. The one you won’t keep cursing during the game when it won’t do what you intended it to.

It all comes down to personal preferences instead of statistics. That car should make you feel like it follows your commands better than others.

Generally, some cars are great at cornering, like Dominus while others are good at flip resets and handling the ball mid-air like Endo. Personally, I love Marauder for a defensive gameplay when I’m in the mood to keep the goal.

So the best way forward to select your fav car is to turn your game on, go to the “Free Play” mode and test all the available cars. Give every car a good chance and find the car that matches your playing style.

(Pro tip: Most of the pros go with either Octane or Fennec, cause they have a very advantageous hitbox for in-air and on-ground dribbling. I also play with a Lime Fennec: wink wink)
